Toxoplasmosis and Mood Swings

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common parasites in the world. Sixty million people are infected by this parasite and develop toxoplasmosis. Although symptoms rarely emerge, they do exist and mood swings could be the least of your problems.

Symptoms of Toxoplasmosis and Mood Swings
One of the reasons why you won’t even know you’re suffering from toxoplasmosis is because many of its symptoms are similar to what you suffer from when you have mononucleosis or the flu.

Such symptoms include but are not limited to an occasional sore throat, fever and fatigue, headache, swollen lymph node, and various body aches. All these are uncomfortable to have and it’s no wonder why, if you experience more than one of them at the same time, you end up having mood swings.

Other Medical Conditions Causing Toxoplasmosis and Mood Swings
If you have recently undergone organ transplant, are currently being treated with chemotherapy or are suffering from HIV or AIDS, your condition will also put you at risk of suffering the symptoms of toxoplasmosis infection. This includes but isn’t limited to blurry vision, lung problems, seizures, poor coordination, confusion, and headache. Again, all these are certainly not pleasant to have and they can only contribute to your mood swings instead of alleviating them.

Toxoplasmosis and Mood Swings during Pregnancy
It is especially dangerous for your unborn child if you are infected by toxoplasmosis during your pregnancy. The complications can be mild to life-threatening and early detection is critical for effective treatment.

If the infection took place in the early trimester of your pregnancy, there is a lower risk of having your baby similarly infected, regardless of whether you’re suffering from its symptoms or not. Early infection, however, also means it’s possible for the baby to develop complications caused by the disease even without being infected.

Toxoplasmosis can cause stillbirths and miscarriages. If not that, then babies infected with or affected by the disease may be born suffering from a severe eye infection, jaundice, an enlarged liver and spleen, or seizures.

There may also be instances when symptoms of toxoplasmosis will only manifest in the child’s teenage years. Symptoms not only include mood swings but possible blindness, mental retardation, and hearing loss as well.

How You Get Infected with Toxoplasmosis
Prevention is still the best cure for any disease. To avoid mood swings caused by toxoplasmosis, you need to know how to avoid getting infected in the first place.

Infected Cat Feces
Cat lovers are the ones facing the greatest risk of contracting toxoplasmosis. The parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis is most often found in cat feces, especially when your pet has just returned from hunting or is being fed with raw meat. Coming into contact with it while you’re cleaning your pet’s litter box or gardening immediately puts you at risk.

Contaminated Water or Food
T. gondii can also be found in contaminated food and water, especially unpasteurized goat’s milk or meats like pork, lamb, and venison. Eating any of these infected substances or food also puts you at risk.

Contact with contaminated objects and other foods are also another way for you to get infected with toxoplasmosis.

Unsafe Organ Transplants
Last but not the least, make sure that any blood or organ transplant you receive is completely safe and clean.

Keep all these tips in mind and you’ll be free from mood swings caused by toxoplasmosis!

Ways on How to Improve Mind Mapping

The software made for mind mapping owns the most comprehensive tools that can be used in order to create a clearer and concise map, visually. These concept map are able to communicate different kinds of knowledge and information with such elaborate clarity. But even so, the effectiveness of the map depends on the person who will use it. Here are some ways of maximizing the efficiency of your mind mapping software.

Optimize your map contents.
Your map is not only meant to clear up things for you but also for others. Some how, you have to relate your ideas to other people in order for them to understand what you are trying to convey. Utilizing your maps for others to understand must need severe analysis because the people will definitely have critical eyes for giving out their comments. There are so many questions that you are to encounter. Questions like “Does your map make any sense?” or “Was it written clearly or was it just too ambiguous to comprehend?” Judgments like these are to be expected that is why, it is important that the contents of your map is optimized to the fullest of understanding that people can see right through.

Use one map as your basis.
Think of it as a master map that controls all your other maps. Meaning, it is just one map that contains the contents of the other maps that enables organization and quick access to all the diagrams that you have created. This will enable you to organize projects and knowledge in such a way that makes sense to you and, well, to other people who will look at it the other way around. Your personalized links of maps should provide you with a measurable leap of productive ways.

Use only one map with one specific purpose.
An idea must be reflected with the same aspects of the branches. The ideas and information should be on a single purpose or topic. In order to stick to best results, you have to stay focused on the same subjects and the content must convey the issue to you. Don’t put irrelevant topics that will just put you in big trouble. Once your map becomes complicated branching out into different diverged areas, consider that you have to break the map into small sub-maps.

Do away with unnecessary information and clutters.
Sometimes, designers of mind maps get too carried away that the end result doesn’t make sense any more. Maps that are too cluttered are quite difficult to fix and worse, the person can get stuck on an idea and has no option of going forward or moving back. Generally, your ideas must be briefly keyed inside your map. Your topics should be summarized statements which are persuasive enough like news headlines. If ever you wanted to add details and additional information under that category, leave spaces so that you can include it when that time comes.

Be consistent
To avoid confusion, you have to be consistent in every aspect of your mind mapping. The line styles, color, visual elements and even colors must follow a single order. Each of these elements can help convey more meaning to your map’s concept if used in a systematic and consistent manner.

Using it haphazardly can result to chaos and may eventually confuse the people who may see it.

How to Push Your Kids to Save

Saving money is difficult in this day and age, especially with economies all over the world failing, and especially with a lot of people scrambling to get money that they should have saved years and years ago if only they had been more proactive. If you are regretting not being able to save much earlier, now is not too late. First, you can start setting money aside so that you can get more money to spend in the future. And second, you can teach your own kids to save so that they do not end up in any financial messes from which they cannot recover.

Saving money may not be an obligation for your kids, however, and it can therefore be difficult for them to get any work done if they do not feel that spending and saving are relevant to them. In fact, many kids are supported by their parents until they reach high school or college, and their conception of the value of money, not to mention the value of hard work, can be twisted, if not immature.

Moreover, with mass media structured the way it is, you need to contend with the social need to spend, spend, and spend on luxury, novelty items, or to simply meet trends. How do you bump up against this kind of mentality and save your kids from the poorhouse?

Here are a few tips that you could follow when you start thinking of how your kids should save.

- Set a good example. It can be difficult for your kids to simply save when they see you spending money at every chance that you get. Instead of going to the mall to get the latest DVD player or flat screen TV, take your kids to the park on Sundays and have a nice family lunch. Instead of going to a fancy restaurant routinely, go only on special occasions and teach your kids to budget their money.

- Save visibly. Have a jar set out where you can drop pennies and other spare change so that your children can see it eventually fill up. This way, they can set up their own jars too. Have a contest and turn it into a race: see who can fill up their jars the fastest and you can give more money to the best saver!

- Encourage your children to work over the summer. It can be hard to correlate work with earning money, and you can start your children early with this kind of life lesson. Start out small: give them small change for helping out with some chores, such as mowing the lawn, raking leaves up, or cleaning the upstairs bedroom. Encourage your kids to get together with their friends and put up a service, such as babysitting or house cleaning. Build on these lessons until your children rely on their own resources for money and job hunting.

- Have a savings account exclusively in your children’s names, but do not hand them credit cards! They need to have their own means to save and monitor their savings and spending, but do not provide them with the illusion that money is easy to spend, and all that they need is a piece of plastic.

- Have a Threshold Award. If your child reaches a certain point in his or her savings, offer to add to a certain amount of money to his or her account as a reward.

Tired of putting things off? – Put an end to procrastination today

I’ve been planning to write a novel for the last twenty years. I keep putting it off. Best-selling author John Grisham wrote his first novel while working full-time as an attorney; he was as busy as the rest of us, but he found a way to accomplish his dream. How did he do it? He beat procrastination by forcing himself to get up earlier every morning so he could work on his book before he went to work.

Take this quiz to find out if you need to put an end to procrastination:

- Do you write down your priorities? Do some things seem less urgent when you look at them in the light of your priorities?

- Do you ask yourself which of several tasks is the most important one before you decide what task to tackle next?
- Do you accept full responsibility for missing a deadline, rather than blaming it on forces beyond your control?

- Do you focus on finishing a job on time, rather than looking for excuses to explain why you’re going to miss another deadline?

- Do you make sure people know when not to disturb you?

- Do you have a habit of turning off the phone when you need to concentrate completely on a job? Do you focus on the job at hand, rather than fretting over what went wrong in the past?

- When you’ve done your best, do you know when to wrap up a project?-Do you feel that spending more time on it will only keep you from starting your next job?

If you answered “yes” to all of the above questions, congratulations-you’re in John Grisham’s league. If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, pick one and make a commitment to do something about it today. Ask yourself if you have really considered all the consequences of procrastination. Do you want to live with them forever? Do you have a legitimate reason for postponing jobs? And after thinking about these questions, ask yourself if you delay tasks for justifiable reasons-or if you just make excuses to procrastinate. Here’s what I’ve learned to do:

- Always remind yourself that you have as much time as people who do great things.

- Make your best estimate of how much time a task will take.

- Write an inspirational phrase on a 3 x 5 card and use it whenever the procrastination monster pops up.

Shakespeare said, “Thoughts are but dreams till their effects be tried.” You’ve taken the first step to defeat procrastination by reading this article; now take the next step and tackle a job you know you should have started a long time ago. I took my next step this morning-I got up earlier than usual to start my novel.

The Cure for Wild Mood Swings

Here are seven simple tips to help you achieve a cure for your wild mood swings.

Acknowledge the problem.
This is the first step in curing wild mood swings especially with men. Since mood swings and depressions are more common with women, most of all during menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, they don’t have as hard a time admitting to having such problems.

With men, it’s quite different. Mood swings are uncommon or so they think and they often consider it a weakness. Unfortunately, curing wild mood swings is impossible unless they acknowledge the problem and become willing to seek treatment for it.

Exercise regularly.
This will come as a surprise to many but the mere act of walking briskly outdoors for about twenty minutes each day has proven to be more effective than antidepressants. As you can see, the best cures for wild mood swings aren’t always medical in nature. They can be natural, too.

Walking outdoors is especially helpful because not only do they give your body an overall workout but they also allow you to breathe fresh air and socialize. Enjoying the company of a friend or loved one or simply taking pleasure in your surroundings will make you happy and consequently less prone to suffering from mood swings.

Eat healthy.
Another natural cure for wild mood swings is having the right diet. Sticking to the right diet is easier than most people think. Unless you have a medical condition like hypertension or diabetes and which requires a special diet, eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to abstain from any food group.

Rather, moderation is the key to having the right diet. Eat moderately of any food group and you’ll be safe. Wine and dark chocolate for instance comes with its own share of health benefits and including them in your diet won’t be bad at all but only if you consume the appropriate amount.

Of course, healthy eating will be always made more effective if you eat more fruits and greens. Drink lots of water, too! Water helps remove toxins from your body and improves not only your health but your overall well-being, too.

If you’re feeling happy and full, there’s no reason for you to suffer from mood swings.

Be happy.
Happiness is a state of being. It involves not only your emotions but your thoughts and psychological health as well.

Being at peace helps make you happier, but it’s not easily achieved. One way of gaining inner peace is by meditation. Meditating helps you relax and enjoy the maximum value of your rest.
Meditation also helps you gain more control over your moods, consequently reducing the frequency of your mood swings.

Meditation is best done in seclusion. Try reserving a few moments of the day for yourself. Look for a room where you can meditate in silence and without any distraction. If you don’t know how to meditate, there are various exercises like yoga or tai-chi to help you do so.

Communicate.
Talking things out will also reduce the frequency of your mood swings, but again, this is more difficult for men than it is for women. While women generally have no problems airing out their feelings, men are usually unwilling to talk about what’s bothering them, much less ask help for it.

Do all these and they can surely cure your wild mood swings.

Using the Mind for Concept Mapping

The mind is a powerful tool to assist men in doing daily activities normally and adequately. Concept mapping is an efficient equipment that uses the mind in order to enhance different types of learning and thinking which are required in schools and universities. In order to make a map, you have to write down the main idea on the center of the page.

The central idea may be in terms of a phrase or word that is placed at the center and wait for drops of branches grow around it that represents sub-ideas which have grew out of the central idea. Concept mapping is a useful technique in taking down notes and being represented in a graph. Concept networks are referred to as knowledge maps. The different networks usually consist of links and nodes. Links are the ones representing the relationship between different concepts and nodes are the ones representing the different concepts.

Concepts are sometimes linked with labels. Links can be in forms of uni-directional, bi-directional, or non-directional. Generally, links and concepts can be categorized in such a way that they can be specified, associated and divided in categories like temporal or even causal relations.

However, mapping can rely greatly on a random input of intentional sequence, on the other hand, brainstorming is a result of gushes of blood being spilled out of one’s mind and create out-of-this-world and zany ideas which can be connected to the center point. Brainstorming demands a lateral way of thinking whereas concept mapping provides convergent thinking opportunity to fit the ideas together in one piece of central matter. 6. Enables the person to look at a certain situation in a several different ways and doesn’t portray an idea locked laterally.

7. Complex relationships among giving out of ideas become more evident.

8. Lastly, it allows the person to see material gaps, contradictions and even paradoxes in an easier manner. Through mind mapping formulation of questions encourages the person’s creativity and discovery.

Time management is synonymous with what college is all about

When you get to this stage in life, you will realize that additional tasks, schedules and responsibilities are laid out for you. If you do not know how to handle these things, you will find yourself stressed and burdened even before you finish your first year.

That is why it is important that you set up proper time management to help you keep all your sanity intact.

Here are some college time management tips you will find more than helpful.

1. Know what you want to accomplish.

Set some goals for yourself. This can be based on a daily, weekly, semester or an even longer span of time. Have a definite goal for your academics and extra-curricular activities.

It is important that these two should be thought of separately because you will want to know what should come first and what will come last in your schedule. Try to accomplish the most important things first before you decide if you can set aside time for other things that are of less importance.

2. Be systematic. Being systematic and well-organized can help you achieve the goals you have set in an orderly manner. Consider the tasks that are taking more of your time that need not be. That is why you have set goals in the first place; to be able to accomplish the necessary things.

Have a proper schedule set up detailing not only your class schedules, but also activities, events and other things that are important in achieving your goals.

In the schedule, never forget to note deadlines so you would not have any problem keeping up with them. By putting them on top of everything else, you do not have to go through cramming and rushing off to finish them in limited time.

Stand by the timely schedule you have created so you can build up a regular routine you can follow in the process of learning time management.

3. First things first.

Learn to prioritize your tasks. Know which ones you have to finish ahead of time and which ones can be put on hold. Do not drift from one task to another. You will just end up starting on many things but not really finishing any of them. You will achieve more when you stay focus on a particular task before starting on another.

Numbering your tasks according to their importance can be helpful. It does not make sense prioritizing a task that you like better when the one you dislike is due in a few days time. Like it or not, the project needed to be done. And you only have yourself to do that.

4. Put spare times into use.

What are spare time? It is when you find yourself just sitting, walking or wandering with nothing to do. While waiting for your friends on the cafeteria, instead of just looking around every now and then, take out your notes and browse through them to prepare yourself for the exam next week.

Another example of spare time is when you are waiting for your professor to come into a class. You can make a draft for your project during those times. You never know. By the time your class started, you may have finished a layout of your project. Thus minimizing the time you need to set aside for it.

5. Do not be a victim of procrastination.

It can be noted that procrastination is the archenemy of time management skills. Procrastination is simply putting up for tomorrow what might have been accomplished today.

If you plan on finishing the task set for today, stick to that time schedule. By doing so, you will avoid the stress of having to ram it into another day that may be full already. It is not easy racing against time because time always has a way of getting ahead of you.

By setting goals and making yourself determined to accomplish them, procrastination is diminished.

6. Make the most of your most productive time.

In a day, you probably have moment when you are more productive. Make the most of these times and schedule the most demanding tasks on that particular time. On the other hand, less demanding tasks should be set for times when you have less energy and enthusiasm.

By following the steps mentioned, you will achieve better time management skills and be a better college student.

How to Motivate Yourself

Motivation is not something that is easy to come by, especially when you have grown up in a neighborhood or household that is generally laid back and easy to please. But as you grow older, you may come to realize that motivation is key to many human activities. For one, you cannot simply sit back, relax, and watch your deadlines go by in school, or you may never get your ticket to go to college.

You cannot simply slack off in college and drink yourself to death (or a series of F’s), or you may never get a job. And when you are finally sitting at your desk or driving your car or working or contributing to the economy, you cannot simply leave all your duties and lie down at home. You will need to do as you did in school: meet deadlines, complete requirements, finish reports, and in general, live your life without losing your energy.

How can you motivate yourself? For a lot of people who have been burned out in school, college, or the workplace, this can be a difficult thing to achieve. However, there are a few tips that you can consider when you feel that you cannot push yourself further or farther.

- Know what exactly it is you want. What are you motivating yourself to do? Do you merely want to finish a job, or do you want to earn a lot of money? Set tangible, or at least manageable goals for yourself. If you know exactly what you want, you can get it, and you can motivate yourself to get it.

- Give your work a purpose. The problem with a lot of people is that they work hard but they don’t know what their work is for. Do they want money? Are they simply working toward money? Do you want money, or does your money have a purpose? Give yourself a tangible purpose so that you can know what you are working for. Striving for money is an empty goal; striving for money so that you can get a good house and a nice car might be more tangible; striving for more money so that you can help your siblings go to college, your parents to enjoy their retirement, and your family to have a better house and car might be even better.

- Take a break. Sometimes, being burned out means that you need to stay away from things for a moment, have some time alone to yourself, and get an outsider’s view of your situation. When you start getting fatigued more often, your body might be telling you to slow down; and slowing down can mean re-energizing yourself by taking a vacation, or even just taking a walk. You may want to set aside some alone time each day for you to recharge, so that you are not constantly being barraged with work.

- Don’t be afraid to say no when you are offered yet another duty. Sometimes, you can get so much work that you are saturated with stress, and you reach the point where you simply want to give up and not start working. Keep your work to a manageable level. You need to stay sane to keep on working in the long run.

- Reward yourself for a job well done! Plan out a trip for yourself, or promise to take yourself to the movies if you complete your work. Little rewards, such as snacks and a cup of hot chocolate, can work too.

Tips for students who want to overcome procrastination

Take this quiz to find out if you-or any students in your family-need to get serious about overcoming procrastination:

- Do you put off assignments until the last possible hour because you like to think of yourself as the type of person who works best under pressure?

- Do you write down your priorities before you start projects? Do many things seem unimportant when you look at them in the light of these priorities?

- Do you ask yourself which of several tasks is the most important one before you rush into an assignment?

- Do you concentrate on finishing an assignment when you’re in danger of missing a deadline, rather than complaining that you never have enough time to get your work done?

- Do you make sure your friends know when not to disturb you?

- Do you turn off the TV and your phone when you need to work on an important assignment? Do you concentrate completely on what you’re doing now, rather than dwelling on what you did in the past?

- When you’ve done the best you can, are you content to wrap up a project and hand it in as it is?-Do you generally make good estimates of how much time it will take to finish an assignment?

If you answered “no” to any of the above questions but the first one (I hope you answered “no” to that one), you can develop better study habits by getting serious about procrastination. Try doing the hardest assignments first. Sandwich a difficult assignment between two of your favorite ones.

Most students dread writing assignments, putting them off to the last possible minute. Writing is one of the most important skills a student can develop. Here are some tips from great writers that can help you conquer the procrastination monster:

- Winston Churchill wrote about 5 million words in his lifetime. That’s the equivalent of ten thousand 500-word articles, so he must have enjoyed writing very much. And he wrote well-well enough to win a Nobel Prize for literature. Churchill once said: “When you’re going through Hell, keep going.” To paraphrase that advice for all students struggling with a writing assignment: When you don’t know what to write, keep writing.

- Don’t be a bleeder. (Journalists who agonize over every word they write are known in their profession as “bleeders.”) The faster you write, the more you’ll enjoy writing. Jack London, one of my favorite writers when I was a student, said that “you can’t wait for inspiration; you have to go after it with a club.”

- Another Nobel Prize Laureate, John Steinbeck, said: “Write freely and as rapidly as possible and throw the whole thing on paper. Never correct or rewrite until the whole thing is down. Rewrite in process is usually found to be an excuse for not going on.” In other words, rewriting before you finish a first draft is an excuse for procrastination.
